When a woman sends you a flirty text, respond to the thing she actually said, match the level of playfulness you both seem comfortable with, and give the conversation somewhere pleasant to go. If she writes, “You looked rather pleased with yourself last night 😉”, you could reply, “I was. Although you were responsible for at least half the trouble.” A little teasing or a genuine compliment can work. You don't need to become crude, deliver a prepared line or pretend to be cooler than you are.

If she texts about a joke you shared, reply to that joke before reaching for a grand declaration. Suppose you played an enthusiastic but unsuccessful game of croquet and she writes, 'I believe you owe me a rematch.' You might say, 'The flowerbeds have recovered, but my pride hasn't. Saturday?' That's warm and playful because it belongs to your actual conversation. You don't need a quotation about fate to answer an invitation to croquet.

This is where gentlemen often go wrong. A pleasant, teasing message appears and they assume it requires an entirely new personality. In truth, the most attractive response may be the natural one you'd give if she were smiling at you across the table.

How can you tell if a text is flirting?

THE ART OF MONTYFILE 151 / AN ILLUSTRATED SCENE

A wink, a teasing remark or a compliment can suggest flirtation, but a single emoji doesn't settle the question.

Consider what you've already shared.

Have you both been joking? Has she referred to something specific between you? Does she ask questions, laugh at your replies and help keep the conversation moving?

If so, a light, warm answer makes sense.

But a woman can send a smiley face or joke without wanting romance. Don't interpret every cheerful message as permission to jump into sexual talk.

Suppose she says, “You were quite funny at the quiz.”

A sensible reply is, “Thank you. I was particularly proud of the three answers I got right. You made the evening far more entertaining.”

You're showing interest while leaving her free to enjoy the exchange as she chooses.

If the tone grows more flirtatious on both sides, lovely. If not, you still sound like an agreeable human being.

How to reply playfully to her flirty message

You don't have to start a different subject when she's already handed you a good one.

If she writes, “I'm still recovering from your terrible dancing,” you might reply: “That was my restrained routine. The advanced version requires a larger dance floor and a small insurance policy.”

If she writes, “You were rather competitive,” you could answer: “Only because you were winning. I'm a generous opponent when victory is assured.”

The point isn't to win a competition for the cleverest sentence.

You're continuing a shared moment.

A gentle exaggeration can create laughter, especially when the joke falls partly on you.

But don't mock something she's sensitive about, and don't turn teasing into a series of insults disguised as flirting.

If she's laughing with you, carry on. If the playfulness isn't returned, change gears.

Compliments work better when they sound personal

“Gorgeous.”

“Beautiful.”

“Sexy.”

These aren't forbidden words. But repeated without context, they can make your message sound as though it was prepared for somebody else entirely.

Try noticing something specific.

“I loved hearing you talk about that ridiculous theatre production. Your laugh made the entire evening.”

Or: “I've been thinking about your story of the runaway umbrella. I suspect you're far more adventurous than you pretend.”

A thoughtful compliment tells her what you actually enjoyed.

You can also respond to her compliment without automatically launching into one about her appearance.

If she writes, “That jacket looked good on you,” an amused reply might be: “High praise! It has spent three years waiting for an occasion worthy of its buttons.”

Then, if it feels natural, tell her you enjoyed seeing her.

A gentleman needn't reduce himself to either cold indifference or a shower of exaggerated flattery.

Respond to the joke she actually made

Cedric drafted this reply to Lucille:

A flirty message can be lighthearted without becoming an announcement that you're planning a wedding. If she teases you about losing a game, a reply like 'I'll agree to the rematch if you promise not to celebrate quite so magnificently' keeps the joke going. If her replies become more personal, follow her lead without assuming every tease is an invitation to sexual talk.

“Absolutely not,” I said.

“Too much?”

I confiscated his telephone for four minutes.

“Good. Tell her that.”

No medieval declarations required.

Flirty text replies for compliments and teasing

When she says: “You seem like trouble.”

You could reply: “Only the sort involving a second helping of pudding and an inconveniently late train.”

When she says: “I bet you say that to everybody.”

Try: “Only to people who've demonstrated your extraordinary taste in disastrous films.”

When she says: “I had a lovely time yesterday.”

Try: “So did I. I'm still laughing about your account of the missing wedding cake. I'd enjoy seeing you again.”

When she says: “You're quite charming, aren't you?”

You might say: “Occasionally. Usually until I attempt to operate a parking meter.”

And when she sends something straightforward like “Wish you were here,” you don't need to deflect it with a joke. If you feel the same, a sincere “That would've been lovely. I wish I was there too” may fit perfectly.

Each example assumes it's consistent with how you really feel. Don't borrow a line that makes you sound like a stranger wearing your coat.

Flirtation isn't an invitation to get explicit

A cheeky message from a woman doesn't automatically mean she'd welcome a sexual one.

If you've only been chatting a short time, don't assume she wants intimate photographs, questions about her body or a sudden description of your private fantasies.

Dating platforms including Bumble discourage unsolicited sexual messages and advise respecting the other person's boundaries. The principle applies outside the app as well.

Even if the two of you eventually enjoy a more suggestive exchange, that should emerge through mutual comfort, not a stranger forcing the pace.

A playful sentence about a rematch is just that: a playful sentence about a rematch.

An invitation to play croquet again isn't an invitation for intimate photographs. Keep the reply proportionate to the tone you both enjoy.

Good flirtation involves noticing the other person, not treating every message as permission for escalation.

What if you aren't naturally quick with jokes?

Then don't try to compete with a professional comedian.

A warm response is perfectly respectable.

She says, “I enjoyed meeting you.”

You answer, “I enjoyed it too. You made that rather dull exhibition great fun.”

She says, “You made me laugh.”

You answer, “That makes two of us. I haven't smiled so much at a museum in years.”

There is nothing dull about being genuinely pleased to know somebody.

A man who is quieter in real life may find an elaborate teasing performance exhausting to maintain.

Better to sound like yourself. If she likes your thoughtful answers, that's a much firmer beginning than attracting her with the impression that you're permanently auditioning for a television comedy.

You can be charming without being loud.

What to say if she doesn't understand your flirty joke

Perhaps you attempt a joke and she replies, “What do you mean?”

Don't double down and tell her she has no sense of humour.

Just explain lightly.

“Sorry, that sounded funnier in my head. I meant I'd love another game with you.”

If she appears uncomfortable, drop the joke.

Text messages lack the facial expressions and tone that can soften a remark in person. What seems delightfully outrageous to you may look a little strange on her screen.

One misunderstood line is not a romantic catastrophe.

A brief explanation followed by ordinary conversation is usually far more graceful than a ten-paragraph defence of your comedic genius.

And there's no need to demand that she send laughing emojis to prove she enjoyed it.

When to turn a flirty text conversation into a date

A flirty conversation can develop towards a date, but it doesn't have to do so immediately.

If you've been chatting pleasantly and both seem interested, mention an activity connected to your shared joke.

“Our croquet rivalry remains unresolved. Would you fancy coming to the club's next public afternoon with me and getting tea afterwards?”

Or, for a simpler occasion: “I'd like to see you again. Shall we have coffee on Sunday?”

Give her a choice. If she isn't ready, don't convert every message into another invitation.

A match, a smile or a flirtatious text doesn't guarantee a date. It gives you reason to see whether the two of you want to take the conversation further.

Good timing is about mutual interest, not a fixed number of texts.

10 / FROM THE MONTY FILES

You can allow a conversation to end pleasantly

Not every lively exchange needs to last until two in the morning.

If you need to get on with work or sleep, say so.

“This has made my evening. I'd better get some sleep before I lose another battle with the alarm clock. Speak soon.”

That's infinitely better than disappearing in the middle of a sentence because you believe mystery creates desire.

And you don't need to send a second witty message when she hasn't responded to the first.

Give her the same freedom you'd like yourself: to answer when she has time, to change the subject and to decide whether the conversation is enjoyable.

Flirting ought to feel like a shared dance, not one gentleman dragging his partner around the ballroom.

11 / FROM THE MONTY FILES

Let a flirty text sound like you

If she continues the joke another day, you can enjoy the exchange or suggest another chance to meet. If she changes the subject, follow the new conversation. The point isn't to secure a perfectly timed witty line, but to respond as yourself and notice whether you both like talking.

He lost. Again.

Lucille suggested tea the following Saturday.

To answer a flirty text well, meet her where the conversation already is: personal, playful if welcome, and sincere when sincerity fits better.

Flirtation works best as a shared exchange, not a rehearsed performance, old boy. My free 14-page 7 Secrets to Becoming a Babe Magnet is available through the guide offer below.
